Series: The Technological, Globalized Dimension of Science

In 2014, coinciding with the commemoration of its 60th anniversary, CERN initiated a program of lecture series in collaboration with the BBVA Foundation around its particle physics program. The Secrets of Particles. Fundamental Physics in Everyday Life; LHC Run 2: Advancing Technologies and Solving Enigmas; and CERN Resumes LHC Operation and Prepares Its Future, were the titles chosen for the first three series.

Staying at the forefront of discovery is an absolute priority for researchers in basic physics, which means continuously increasing the power and resolution of experiments, confronting technological limits, optimizing costs, and reducing energy consumption and ecological impact. Responsible research and innovation are fundamental for our future.

In view of the expectation generated around the science of high technology, and the lectures’ success with the interested public, a fourth series will be organized in 2018 with the title The Technological, Globalized Dimension of Science. The aim of the series is to delve deeper into relevant innovative aspects of the large projects now being developed in the area of particle physics. The series will follow a thematic approach placing special emphasis on the technologies and large scientific infrastructures of the future, including preliminary studies of CERN projects after the LHC. It will also address the possible participation of CERN in experiments outside the Geneva laboratory as an integral part of its global strategy.
