This project comprises an exhaustive study of the entry barriers erected by European banking institutions to hinder economic integration in Europe. Almost all of the mergers of the past fifteen years (between banks from the same country) will be empirically analysed.

We will then go on to study the investment made in bank product quality in main European markets, as a possible strategy gambit by institutions to lessen price competition. The empirical study will focus on bank loan books. The findings of this research will elucidate the main obstacle to bank sector integration: the persistence of entry barriers.

Also, insofar as investment in banking product and service quality has been part of a strategic reaction against economic integration, we will have acquired empirical evidence of another disciplining force in banking business (on the lending side).
