The field of international trade has undergone significant developments over the last 25 years, particularly with the rise of firm-level approaches to the study of trade flows and multinational activity. However, there remain several underexplored areas (or “uncharted waters”). In this lecture, Prof. Pol Antràs will review recent developments in the field, while outlining potential new areas of research, including a more prominent role of oligopolistic firm behavior in workhorse models, and a more active cross-fertilization with other branches of economics. He will also discuss the potential role of big data and artificial intelligence in shaping the causes and consequences of international trade flows, and the design of trade policies.
