‘The Amazing Liquid Xenon for Dark Matter WIMPs Detection’

A variety of experiments attempts to find out what the Dark Matter that fills our Universe is made of, resulting in a vibrant field of research. This talk reviews what we know (or do not know) about the nature of Dark Matter, before introducing the basic principles for its direct detection in laboratory-scale detectors, focusing on Weakly Inter- acting Massive Particles. Professor Aprile presents an overview of the field and concentrates on one class of experiments using liquid xenon which has shown the greatest promise to-date for direct detection of WIMPs in the Milky Way.
