PhD in Philosophy and Professor of Aesthetics, he contributes on a regular basis to daily newspaper El País. His poetic works to 2007 have been brought together in Última sangre. Among his published novels are Mansura, Historia de un idiota contada por él mismo o El contenido de la felicidad, Diario de un hombre humillado (winner of the Premio Herralde), Cambio de bandera and Génesis. His extensive output as an essayist includes La paradoja del primitivo, El aprendizaje de la decepción, La Venecia de Casanova, Baudelaire y el artista de la vida moderna, Diccionario de las artes, Salidas de tono, Lecturas compulsivas, La invención de Caín, Cortocircuitos: imágenes mudas, Esplendor y nada and La pasión domesticada. His latest books include Ovejas negras, Abierto a todas horas, Autobiografía sin vida, Autobiografía de papel and Nuevas lecturas compulsivas. An accomplished author comfortable in all genres, his work stands out for its acute sense of humor and analytical depth. In June 2015, he was elected to fill the “H” chair of the Real Academia Española.
