Jean-Charles Rochet is the Swiss Bank Institute Senior Chair in the Department of Banking and Finance at the University of Zurich and a research associate at the Institut d’Économie Industrielle (IDEI) of Toulouse School of Economics. With a PhD in economics from the University of Paris, he has taught at the Toulouse School of Economics and the London School of Economics, and held visiting appointments at universities and central banks around the world. He is a former president of the Econometric Society (2012) and has numbered among its members since 1995.
Professor Rochet has published more than eighty papers in international journals, as well as seven books, including Microeconomics of Banking (with X. Freixas, The MIT Press) and Why Are There So Many Banking Crises? (Princeton University Press). His research interests lie in banking, financial stability, the industrial organization of financial markets, and contract theory.
