BIO
Professor Peter M. Atkinson is Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology at Lancaster University and Dean (interim) of the Faculty of Health and Medicine at Lancaster University. The main focus of Peter’s research is in remote sensing and spatial data science, including spatial and spatio-temporal statistics and machine and deep learning, applied to a range of environmental and socio-economic phenomena. His most significant research themes include: (i) vector-borne disease transmission systems, including trypanosomiasis and malaria; (ii) global vegetation phenology and its response to climate and anthropogenic drivers; (iii) natural hazards and their impacts, including flood modelling, landslide susceptibility mapping and near-Earth object impacts, and (iv) image downscaling and image fusion, based on explicit models of the space-time sampling framework.
Published over 270 peer-reviewed articles on these topics in international scientific journals. H-index of 47 in WoS. Led multiple large grants and supervised around 60 PhD students. Authored one book and over 50 refereed book chapters. Edited eight journal special issues and eight books. Previously Editor of International Journal of Remote Sensing Letters for nine years. Currently Associate Editor for Computers and Geosciences and sit on editorial boards of Geographical Analysis, Spatial Statistics, International Journal of Applied Earth Observation and Geoinformation, and Environmental Informatics.
