Professor and currently head of the Department of Population Health, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She holds degrees in zoology, biological anthropology and statistics, and taught demography and anthropology at the London School of Economics and Durham University, before taking up her current LSHTM post in 2012. Grantee of the European Research Council. She co-founded the European Human Behaviour and Evolution Society, and is Honorary Secretary of the British Society for Population Studies.
