Convinced of the need to promote contemporary graphic art and encourage its broader practice within the artistic community, Calcografía Nacional (part of San Fernando Fine Arts Academy) and the BBVA Foundation joined forces ten years back to launch an annual edition of engravings by an invited group of 10 artists, each of whom contributes an original, unpublished work. In 2001, the initiative was extended to foreign artists and other graphic techniques besides engraving.

The last ten years have brought a veritable explosion in digital graphic arts, which have evolved from a creative sideline into the centre of debate about the future shape of artistic practice. This book is a synthesis of discussions held at the symposium on Arte gráfico and nuevas tecnologías organized by Calcografía Nacional and the BBVA Foundation, and examines the broad church that is graphic art from an academic, cross-disciplinary standpoint.
