This is a presentation of some basic studies on the structure of biomembranes carried out by the Molecular Biology and Proteins Department of the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in London. At the conference organized by the BBV Foundation in 1993, the speaker Professor Chapman explained how his team’s technical studies based on mimicking of the structure of these biomembranes have led to the production of new biomaterials. The author concluded with the statement that a combination of basic science and innovation can produce new and very useful applications.
