The publication Diccionario del español actual presents the lexicon documented in Spain from 1950 to the present day, with definitions that also show the word’s grammatical function within the sentence, and real examples of its use drawn from a reference corpus of nearly three thousand books and five hundred periodicals.

The definitions and the distribution of entries have been established according to new criteria, in order to provide guidance not just on the meanings of words, but also on their use and behavior within the communicative unit that is the sentence.

The dictionary addresses a wide readership, including those with a general understanding of grammar, who will find abundant information of this kind compared to standard reference works in the genre, and users whose professional activity revolves around the language – writers, translators, and teachers and students of Spanish, including teachers and students of Spanish as a second language – who will get the most out of its consultation.

New online edition

Building on the editions published in 1999 and 2011, this significantly enlarged and updated version of Diccionario del español actual has been published by the BBVA Foundation in electronic format. With this online edition users can choose between the standard dictionary search results display or an advanced display offering information on the grammatical functions of the word’s different meanings as well as the texts on which it is based.
