The changes in the banking business make it necessary to rethink the role played by financial institutions within the economic system. Working from this point of view, this study analyzes questions such as the comparison of alternative financial systems, the role of banks on economic growth, information exchange between companies and financial creditors, whether to acquire industrial holdings in restructuring processes, etc. The publication is a report of the International Conference on the Industrial Economy and Finance, organized by the BBV Foundation in 1994 in San Sebastian, with the collaboration of the Center for Economic Policy Research, the Basque Government and the Provincial Government of Guipuzcoa.
