Much of the work of Spanish geographers from 1970 to 1990 is a reflection of the new political, social and economic realities in our country. The aim of this research is to offer a clear and illustrative image of the situation of Spanish geography over these two decades in three areas: academic and professional organization and the activity of geographical institutions; basic research in classical areas; and the new prospects for work over the coming years. The book consists of a contribution by a select group of Spanish geographers who were assisted by the BBV Foundation to attend the 27th International Geographical Congress held in Washington in 1992, where they presented their contributions to the scientific development of geography. Until this volume was published, Spanish geography had only been talked of as a scientific discipline a few times and by few people.
