The integration of the European financial markets and the appearance of the single European currency generate questions about the regulation of the financial markets. This study is an analysis of various theories on banking and financial intermediation and their implications for economic policies. This is the perspective from which it deals with matters such as bank lending to companies, competition in banking and financial intermediation in Eastern Europe. The book is a record of the conference on Financial Intermediation in the Construction of Europe, organized by the BBV Foundation in San Sebastian in 1992, with the collaboration of the Center for Economic Policy Research.
