In September 1788, Alessandro Malaspina and his associate José de Bustamante y Guerra approached the Spanish government about organizing a round-the-world political and scientific expedition calling at the Crown’s possessions in America and Asia. This journey became popularly and publicly known as the Malaspina expedition or the Malaspina and Bustamante Expedition.
