This publication, which accompanies the Foundation exhibition of the same name, examines a time in Spanish history fraught with the tensions arising from an intense process of social, economic and political change – the opening years of the twentieth century – and the national crisis that followed the debacle of 1898.

The regeneration and reform proposals abounding in this period, and emerging from the most varied quarters, were projected onto an increasingly complex and conflictive country, struggling to cope with modernisation.
